Pompeii is the most important classical
archeological site in Europe. Its wealth of monumental
buildings is unmatched, as is its collection of mosaics and
wall-paintings. But its architecture and art didn’t exist in
a void; they were the framework for a thriving commercial
town where 20,000 people lived, traded, ate, drank,
worshipped and frequented brothels.
Get in among it and evidence of such activities is
everywhere, preserved for almost 2,000 years under the
metres of muck chucked out when Vesuvius exploded on August
24, AD 79. Streets are lined with bars, shops and election
propaganda. Walk inside and you’re seeing the frescoes,
gardens, fountains and kitchens as they were when the
volcano blew.
It’s astonishing, both the extraordinarily familiar (Pompeii
had 89 food takeaways) and the gratifyingly strange. This is
a story of humans, not simply of stone. If the place is now
dead, it was once abundantly alive. Bring a modicum of
imagination, take your time — and you can feel it. This,
rather than construction methods or artistic nuances, is the
true pull of Pompeii.

Our standard itinerary
As the old town is very
large, and very hard to visit (particularly
during the hot season) you will be offered different
solutions. Our professional Tour Guides will be
glad to help you, and to organize your personal
tour. You can choose between a 4 hours tour,
a 2 days tour, or a thematic tour.
What we suggest here is a standard tour, which
can be easily modified, according to your
requirements.
This tour will take about two
hours. Your visit will start from the new
entrance of the Ruins, where you will see the
buildings which were facing the seaside, before
the eruption. Then you will visit the Quadriporticus,
the Small and the Great Theatre,
the Shops, the House of the Ceii,
the Stabian Baths, the Forum, the
Eumachia Building, the Macellum,
the Temple of Jupiter and the Basilica.
Your tour will end at Porta Marina and
the city walls.
If you want, it is possible to make a longer
tour, by visiting the House of the Faun,
the Necropolis of Porta Ercolano, and the
Villa of the Mysteries.
Or else, on the opposite side of the town, you
can visit the Amphitheater, the Great
Palestra, and the Houses of Venus Marina
and Loreius Tiburtinus.
