The Royal Palace of Caserta was
planned by Charles of Bourbon, who came to the Kingdom
of Naples in 1734. King Charles wanted a Royal Palace
inland from Naples, as the Royal Palace of Naples was
too vulnerable for attacks from the sea.
Luigi Vanvitelli was chosen as architect. The first
stone was laid in 1752. He wasn't able to finish his
work - he died in 1773. His son Carlo followed in his
footsteps, and finished the impressive 250 metres wide
façade and the five floors of the building. Inside,
there are some 1200 rooms and 1790 windows. Another
thing absolutely not to be missed here is the giant
staircase that leads up to the apartments. It's all
marble wherever you look, with imposing statues and
plasterworks. Don't forget to look upwards, where
colourful paintings decorate the ceiling. The work on
the gardens was started in 1753: they were designed
after the models of Schönbrunn and Aranjuez, and they
are among the best example of royal gardens in Europe,
with their fountains, a large number of statues
representing different Greek divinities, and a nice
artificial fall, which gives a wonderful perspective, if
you look at it from the entrance of the Royal Palace.

Our itinerary
Your visit to the Royal
Palace of Caserta will take about two hours.
With the help of one of our professional Tour
Guides, you will visit the Palace and the
Royal
Gardens. Your tour will start from the Scalone
d’Onore. Then you will visit the Royal
apartments, the New Apartments, the
Old
Apartments, the Elliptic Room (where you will
see the Royal Crib), and you will finish with
the Royal Theatre and the Royal Chapel.
After the Palace, you will visit the Gardens.
The trip will be held by bus, due to the length
of the path. Through the fountains, the statues
and the falls that embellish the Royal Gardens,
your trip will end at the Great Fall, with the
sculptural group of Diana and Atteon. Here you
will have some time to have a walk around and
take some pictures, before coming back to the
Royal Palace.
